Potatoes and Pears Added to Dirty Dozen

Yes, this is true. I try to check out EWG.org a couple times per year to make sure I’m up-to-date on my dirty dozen and clean 15. Well, the big news is that Potatos and Pears have been added to the dirty dozen list. Bummer.

And the scary thing to me as a mom, “many baby food purees, including more than 1/3 of pear baby foods, still have too many pesticide residues to be sold in Europe.” I cannot figure out why our lawmakers help cover up information like this with the tricky labeling we have on our foods. But that’s a discussion for another day.

Choosing Joy on Monday

Choosing Joy is tough…

(PSA – If you don’t want to read about “women’s issues” then don’t ready on)

It’s Monday. Again. It gets here so fast every week. And I found myself sitting at my desk – crying again. Why? IDK. Maybe because it’s that time of the month? Then I really thought about it.

Here’s how my day started:
1. I woke up with a slight hang-over
2. Right when I woke up I got pissed off at someone I work with
3. I was bummed because Joe slept in so I really didn’t get to snuggle him before I left for the day
4. My workout didn’t go as well I hoped
5. My work computer kept freezing up
6. Got up from my desk to shake off my attitude and when I took my tampax out the wrapper I dropped it on the floor. I didn’t have another one. I stopped keeping a stash in the ladies room because there is some crap person in my building will use all your tampax if you leave them. So…back to my office to get another one, blaming the “Assholes I work with.”
7. Trouble focusing at work because all I can think about is hanging out with my family while reading sweet mommy posts on facebook .

I got up from my desk and went BACK to the bathroom. And just took a time out. I really need to re-focus on finding joy. Yep, I just sat there.  Like a dude.

I truly believe our lives and our happiness are 95% our choices. There are those things that happen that we have no control over. Those can be big things (loss of a loved one), small things (bad hair day). It’s our day to day life that we can choose to be miserable. Or we can choose to find joy. I chose to have a tiny bit too much to drink last night. I chose to let my co-worker get the best of me. I chose to beat myself up over my workout.

Right from the beginning I said, “how my day started.” When I should have said is, “This is how I chose to start my day:” The big mistake I made was succumbing to all those negative thoughts and letting them eat away at me, making my Monday miserable.

1. I chose to drink too much last night. Oh well! Take some Advil and move on.
2. I will pray for my co-worker that they are not so overwhelmed
3. I love watching Joe sleep.
4. We all have things we need to work on. I’m really making good progress on my pull-ups and practicing every time I go to the gym. And I am very fortunate that I get to go to such a nice gym with super nice people.
5. I get paid the same way no matter how times my computer has to re-boot. And what a nice excuse to drink another coffee!
6. LOL! I’m so klutzy!
7. I am so fortunate that I have such a sweet family. I love my hubby and my boy so much that sometimes I feel like I could explode. Ben is so supportive of my goals and dreams. And Joe is so amazing. He changes and grows every day and gives the best snuggles in the whole world.

It’s so easy to fall into the “my life is miserable” cycle and feel down and sorry for yourself all the time. I encourage you to take responsibility for your life and the choices you make. Think about those choices and ask yourself if that choice (or the consequences of your choice) will bring you joy. Here’s how I try to remember to look at my less-than-optimal mornings like this morning:

1. Don’t dwell on mistakes you’ve made in the past. Pick yourself up, move on, and don’t look back.
2. You can’t control the actions of other people. You can only control YOUR reaction to them.
3. Any time I have with my boy is a gift. I cherish ALL of it.
4. Take the good with the bad! We have off days. We have things we need to work on.
5. Like #2, there are situations outside of your control. It’s how you deal with them that matters.

7. My job gives me the means to provide a better life for the people who matter most to me. I love them so much and will do anything for them.

So. How do we get here/there – to a place of finding joy. I’m no licensed therapist or religious leader. But I can tell you what I do to try to find joy every day. First, I encourage you to walk around with a thankful heart. I was trying to find a way to begin to be less negative and I began this journey in my yoga practice. When I started my second round of 3 Week Yoga retreat, I began literally saying a small thankful prayer when folding my hands in gratitude. Next I really took focus on my breathing. When I took my deep breaths, I focused on breathing in new and joyful thoughts and exhaling out all the stress, anxiety, and negative thoughts of the day. After doing this for 30 minutes every day before bedtime, I began sleep better and it helped my overall attitude. Even Ben asked me what was changing – he noticed my attitude getting better and I was a LOT less stressed out. For me, that thankfulness and thoughtfulness in just 30 minutes a day started to beget appreciation and joy. Now I try it throughout my day. Just like anything else, this will take practice. You’ll have good days and bad days. The bad ones, I go back to my mat, decompress, and start over!

Not into prayer or Yoga?  Another idea: when you get into a negative spin, stop and say 3 positive things about the negative situation you’re thonking about.  Pick real positive attributes, not just something made up that you don’t really feel.

Coupon Printing Changes

Do you guys print coupons?  I’m a long-time coupon user and printer.  We don’t use a lot of pre-packaged foods.  But this has been a major way that I have saved us big $$$ on some food and all of our toiletries, paper products, baby needs, and cleaning products.  I typically get all of our shampoo, conditioner, and body wash for free plus an overage (yes the store pays me to buy the product).  The last laundry soup we bought I only paid $0.50 for!  It does take a little work.  I watch the store ads and I try to stack deals.  That means an item will be on sale, I have a manufacturer coupon, and a store coupon.  I’m also very careful NOT to buy an item just because I have a coupon.  I only buy the things we actually will use.

I know a lot of folks hesitate to print coupons because of the printer software you have to download and install.  I know, installing software you’re not familiar with can be scary!  But there’s big news from coupons.com.  This website has, in my opinion, the biggest and best selection of printable coupons.  And now they are doing away with the coupon printer software!  Yes!  So if you aren’t printing because of that software, get your toner ready!

Coupons.com is starting a phone number authentication process.  A pop-up screen will appear when a user tries to print.  Input your phone number and follow the instructions.  Easy peasy!

My honest review of Crossfit

I have NEVER liked going to gyms. NEVER.

I find them super intimidating. As soon as you walk in people start staring. You can never tell, of course, what they’re thinking. But I usually feel like they’re saying something that is mean, like, “that’s not very heavy.” Or something not nice about the way I look.

And all the mirrors.

And then every gym I’ve been to has that guy. You know the one I’m talking about. The one who has to come over and talk to you every day. He has to interrupt your workout, usually says something inappropriate, and is completely in our personal space. Honestly, you’re not quite sure how much working out he really does after he’s gone around and made every woman in the gym feel like she needs a pre-shower shower to get the sleaze off. Uh Yucko!  And the girls there.  They are so pretty and perfect.  And there’s that one who you idolize physically but there’s no way she would stoop to speak to someone like YOU.  Ya know her right?!

So here’s how I ended up in a Crossfot gym: I was getting frustrated because I was TRYING to do Body Beast. I kept hurting myself. And I’ve really been missing being competitive. And I’ve just been feeling a little lost as to what to do for fitness next. My friend had been talking about Crossfit and how much she loves it over the past couple years. So I thought, “You know. I probably could use a little help with my form. Going to a gym is going to suck. But ill have a coach to work on my form and also be a little competitive. I’ll give it a try.” So this past Christmas I tried it.

And here’s what happened: You know what? There’s no mirrors. And no yucko sleaze guy. There’s a different pretty girl with a peffect bottom. But she’s different – she’s REALLY nice and helpful. No one makes me feel like I’m doing a bad job. And the coaches at my gym makes sure you don’t hurt yourself. And everyone is really supportive and encouraging. I’m often the last one to finish and usually doing the lightest weight. But I ALWAYS leave there feeling like a badass. And I can’t wait until I can go back!

So…What does this mean? Well, it means that I’m going to keep doing Crossfit! So far I love it! The people in my class are really nice. I love my coach! And I drink Shakeology EVERYDAY! I’ve started using energize from the performance line for an extra boost. I am really started to feel excited about working out again and motivated to do my best.  (And I can already tell a difference in my strength)

3 tips to help you stick with your fitness

Ya’ll. Can you believe that it is February?! One of the things about this time of year is that it is the time of year where we start to give up on our New Years Resolutions.  They’re too hard.  Or something has messed up the routine.  We can find excuses!

Is losing weight or fitness on your list? If so, how’s it going? Don’t give up yet! I know there are tons of excuses. I hear a lot of people (including me!) say things like, “I don’t have time.” “It’s to much to get ready in the morning.” “I over slept so I couldn’t get my stuff together.” Here’s 3 things that I do to keep myself on track. And really it boils down to prep:

1. Pack all the lunches the night before. I know you’re ready to sit down and relax for the evening. But, if you go ahead and get all that food ready then you’re not rushing around in the morning. Hopefully it’ll only take a few to 10 minutes and then you can sit down! And as a bonus, you’ve got something healthy (or at least cheaper) and it lessens the temptation of eating out. I will use the divided containers and make several lunches at a time. Then I don’t have to do lunches every evening, but only a couple days each week.

2. On the weekend, set out your clothes for the entire week. This includes your workout clothes! I put one of these sweater hangers in Joe’s closet when I first went back to work. Every Sunday I set out his clothes for the week.  That way in the morning I wasn’t scrambling to pick out his clothes.  It finally registered that this will help me get ready for the week too! On Sunday I get through the laundry and put it all away.  While I’m doing that, I go ahead and set out what I’m going to wear that week to both the gym and work. That way, I’m not standing there in the morning frantically picking something out. And I’m not rushing around looking for running socks. Everything is right there! (Yes this is my messy closet!)

3. Choose your workout routine carefully.  If your excuse is time and/or inconvenience of the gym, ever thought about at-home workouts?  Walking and Beachbody workouts got me through that time when I didn’t have the freedom to leave the house with a new baby and the growing pains of going back to work. I started with 21 Day Fix.  But Beachbody has a really good deal right now with the All-Access pass.  You get every Beachbody program at your fingertips for a full year!  Every single one!
