People ask me all the time, “This Shakeology stuff, is it a protein drink or a meal replacement shake?” And I have a tough time describing it, other than “It’s my daily dose of dense nutrition.”
According to the experts, “With 16 to 17 grams of protein per glass, depending on your flavor, Shakeology comes in at roughly the same protein level as a serving of Greek yogurt (18 grams per 7 ounces) or tofu (16 grams in 7 ounces). And it surpasses eggs, which check in at 12 grams for two. While it’s not as high as meat or fish, it still has enough protein for it to count as a Red Container in the Fix Container system.”
So, sure, Shakeology could be considered a protein shake.
That being said, Shakeology has so much more to it than just protein. Most regular protein drinks tend to focus almost exclusively protein. That means these protein drinks don’t have much other nutrition, meaning you are going without things your body needs. But Shakeology, along with protien, includes a variety of nutrients, including carbs and fiber, probiotics, digestive enzymes, phytonutrients, vitamins, and minerals. It works to benefit your overall health, helping to support healthy energy, curb cravings, and support your digestive health. So while you can certainly drink Shakeology to add protein to your diet, you’re missing the big picture—and some of the prime benefits—by focusing exclusively on this one macronutrient.
By itself, Shakeology does not replace a meal. That being said, it certainly can be part of a balanced meal when combined with healthy foods like berries and other fruit, nuts, seeds, and nut butters, avocados, various milks, or whatever else tickles your fancy.
In other words, Shakeology could be considered a healthy way to tide you over, keep you from “pigging out”, and help you stay on course with your balanced, healthy diet. That said, it’s not just a plain old protein (and fiber) shake!
Personally, I can tell a HUGE difference since switching to Shakeology.
Before, especially when I was racing a lot, I was drinking a few different brands of protein drinks, those icky gels, GUs, all those “foods” you eat when you’re training hard. And I was a mess. I was having to take a shelf full of different vitamins, go into the doctor every 1-3 weeks for vitamin shots. My hair was falling out – it was so thin on top it was embarrassing. And I’d have to spray sunscreen on my scalp on the very top of my head to keep my scalp from getting burned. I also had very bad IBS-like symptoms. I would usually miss work about 1 day a week because I needed to be close to the bathroom. And I was constantly taking something for either not being able to go, or having to go non-stop. YUCK!
Since I’ve switched to Shakeology, my digestion is 100% back to normal. Hooray!! And my hair looks the best it’s looked in years! AND I haven’t had to keep taking all the vitamins or take my shots anymore. That’s Shakeology for the win! And that’s why I’m a believer!
